Step 1 - CuttingThe bars of crystal are sent to the lapping department. Here the crystal bars are cut into thin slices by special saws. The bars are pushed up into the saws by air pressure. After they are cut into slices, they are then recut to make smaller squares. The cutting process takes approximately 6 hours.
The square crystal blanks are sent to lapping if they are to be a lower frequency. If they are to be a higher frequency, they are then temporarily glued together and put in the grinder, which grinds the corners off, rounding the crystals.
